The Minister of Education and Training


The Honourable ’Makabelo Mosothoane was born on February 09, 1952 in Kanye, Botswana. She is married with four sons and three grand-children.

Honourable Mosothoane was appointed to the position of the Minister of Education and Training in June 2012. She was elected a Member of Parliament for Hlotse No. 13 representing the Lesotho Congress for Democracy in May 2012. In 2003 she was elected the President of the Lesotho Red Cross, a position she holds to date.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, which she obtained in 1982 at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). In 1973 to 1975, Honourable Mosothoane enrolled with the Prince Marina Hospital in Botswana to pursue nursing studies where she obtained a Diploma in Nursing. She completed her Cambridge Overseas Schools Certificate (C.O.S.C) at Gaborone Secondary School in 1972.

Career/Position/Membership/other Activities

  • Appointed to the position of Principal of Leribe English Medium School in 1991. As a Principal, she was tasked to pioneer the road to establish a high school and whereby she ran the Pre-School, Primary and High School.

  • Appointed Secretary for Leribe English Medium Primary School Management Committee from 1987 to 1990.

  • Member of the Management Committee of Leribe English Medium Primary School in 1986.

  • Teacher at Ntloana Tšoana and Hlotse High Schools

  • Served as a volunteer at the Red Cross Society since high school to date

  • Elected 1st Vice President of the National Red Cross Society in 1999

  • Elected 2nd Vice President of the National Red Cross Society in 1995

  • Elected Chairperson of the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS)- Leribe Division and Member of LRCS National Executive Committee in 1988

  • Elected Secretary of the Leribe Division in 1985

  • District Coordinator in Women in Business in 1990 to 1997

  • Lesotho Association of Teachers (LAT) District Treasurer

  • She has travelled the world in efforts to combat HIV and AIDS, address hunger and emerging disasters and alleviate human suffering.

Under her leadership, Leribe English Medium School (LEMS) is presently enjoying top class recognition in the country due to its outstanding performance nationally at PSLE, JC and COSC.
