The Chinese Embassy in Lesotho has awarded scholarship amounting to M53, 000 to twenty-one students from various high schools of the Berea district at the ceremony held at Assumption High School in Teyateyaneng, on Friday.

The scholarship was coupled with exercise books, school bags, soccer balls, and sanitary towels for girls.

Presenting the scholarships to students, the Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho, Mr. Sun Xianghua said the scholarship is a gesture by which Chinese community contributes towards ensuring education for disadvantaged children, saying education is a right for all children regardless of their social and economic status and that this is also to boost morale of best performing students.

'Some of you will be Lesotho's leaders, and play a vital role in its development,' he said.

He therefore commended the Government of Lesotho for having invested a lot of money in the education sector, noting that this shows its commitment in education.

Mr. Sun Xianghua reiterated that this is the reason Lesotho is ranked among African countries with high literacy rate.

'Lesotho has 86 percent literacy rate,' he said, noting that investment in education, exceeds all other forms of investments.

In appreciation to the donation, the Minister of Education and Training, Mr. Mokhele Moletsane commended the Chinese Community for the donation, which he said it is a sign of love.

Mr. Moletsane commented that without donations of this nature, disadvantaged children would be idling in the streets due to lack of funds to pay for their school fees.

He said in the previous years, the Government of Lesotho enacted a law on compulsory primary education, however expressed concern that many children from destitute families are unable to access high school education because of financial constraints.

'As a result, many children often become victims of various forms of abuse,' Mr. Moletsane remarked, further appealing to the Chinese Community to continue with the humanitarian work.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs, Mr. Habofanoe Lehana said the donation is important, as it paves the students' bright future, noting that it further  strengthens the two countries’ bilateral relations and solidarity.

Mr. Lehana added that China and Lesotho's friendship is symbolised by among other structures; the National Library and the ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre which were constructed by China in the previous years, therefore thanked China for the support it has given to Lesotho and Basotho..

On behalf of the beneficiaries, a female student from Dahon High School in Mapoteng, Teboho Lekokotoane expressed gratitude over Chinese Community’s humanitarian gesture and promised to work hard in their studies.

Present at the occasion were senior government officials, students and teachers.
