The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit congratulated the new Coalition Government of Lesotho following elections of June 03, 2017.

This is according to the Communiqué of the 37th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government which was held in Pretoria, South Africa on August 19 and 20.

The Communiqué states that the Summit has urged the new Government of Lesotho to expedite the implementation of all SADC Decisions and to develop and submit a road map on the implementation of SADC decisions with concrete, clear milestones, and deliverables and report progress at the next meeting of the Double Troika Summit to be held before November 2017.

It says the Summit approved the extension of the tenure of the Oversight committee to continue acting as an early warning mechanism, and to monitor and assist Lesotho to implement SADC decisions.

The Summit welcomed the commitment by the Government of Lesotho to the implementation of SADC Decisions, and commitment of Basotho to engage in a national multi-stakeholder dialogue, to be convened expeditiously and progress to be presented during the Double Troika Summit due in November 2017.

The Communiqué highlights that the Summit reiterated the need for a multi-stakeholder dialogue, bringing together all relevant stakeholders in Lesotho, which will enable an inclusive and transparent means of, ultimately, implementing the Reforms recommended by SADC.

It further points out that the dialogue must be led by Basotho with SADC providing expertise to support the dialogue process.

At this Summit, the President of South Africa, Mr. Jacob Zuma took the position of SADC Chairpersonship from His Majesty King Mswati III of Swaziland, while the deputy chairperson is the President of Namibia, Dr Hage G. Geingob.
