The National Assembly will reconvene on February 26 at Parliament building after it adjourned sine die on January 24.

Speaking in an interview, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Advocate Lebohang Fine Maema said the house will reconvene in order to prepare for this year's budget speech.

He said the Ministry of Finance is yet to inform the Parliament of the exact date of the presentation of the budget speech by Finance Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro.

“The National Assembly will reconvene on February 26 for the agenda of the Ministry of Finance as it prepares to deliver this year's budget speech on a date yet to be announced a day or two after the Parliament's reopening,” he highlighted.

Adv. Maema said Members of Parliament have been notified in order to be around when the date of the budget speech is announced.

Meanwhile, the house adjourned sine die on January 24, after Leader of the House, Mr. Monyane Moleleki had proposed the motion that the house adjourns following its reopening on January 17 from Christmas break.

Mr. Moleleki who is also Deputy Prime Minister had said the motion was procedural, saying after reconvening to enact the laws governing the country, it had to adjourn in order to prepare for the budget speech.

The Leader of the house also mentioned then that Parliament has three main functions thus to enact laws, allocate budget and to follow the funds allocated to ensure that they are properly utilised.

Reopening of Parliament was announced early as per the 14 day notice, and budget speech should be presented in the National Assembly before the end of March of every year, as it is the end of the government's financial year.
