The Prime Minister, Dr Motsoahae Thabane has declared September 30, 2017 as the date for third Local Government Elections.

In his statement, Dr Thabane also announced July 03 as the beginning of an election period hence appealed for Basotho to dedicate their efforts to the participation of the said election.

He said all preparatory processes for the said elections have been duly finalised by the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs in collaboration with the stakeholder institutions such as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Ministries of Finance and of Law and Constitutional Affairs; all which confirmed readiness for the Local Government Elections to roll.

He further reminded Basotho that the second Local Government Elections were previously held on October 01, 2011 with the subsequent ones due on September 31, 2016 having been postponed due to the national commemoration of Lesotho’s 50th Golden Independence Jubilee.

He explicated that the event called for the extension of the Councilors tenure of office beyond their five-year term by a period not exceeding 12 months and this is in terms with the Local Government Amendment Act No. 1 of 2017.

Dr Thabane further noted that the Local Government Elections Act 1998 gives the IEC authority to administer the Local Government Elections despite the initial Act not having had such section bestowing powers on who should call the election as is the case with the general assembly elections that are called by His Majesty the King.

He said the initial Act was amended by the Local Government Elections Amendment Act No.50 of 2016 giving the Prime Minister the authority to call the Local Government Elections with the advice of the Local Government Minister.

The second Local Government Elections which followed the first held in 2005, were previously held on October 01, 2011.
