The Minister of Public Works and Transport has this week appointed a new Roads Directorate Board, the Directorate's Public Relations Manager Mrs. Nozesolo Matela has revealed.

Mrs. Matela said the appointment of the nine board members by Minister Lehlohonolo Moramotse are in accordance with the Roads Directorate Act. Section 7 (1) which stipulates that the Board shall advise the Minister on policy issues in the road sector, adding that the appointments are for a three-year period starting from November 2017 to November 2020.

“Amongst other functions, the Board is tasked with overseeing the implementation of government policy on roads related issues, setting priorities for road maintenance and ensuring implementation of approved road standards,” reads a press statement from the Roads Directorate.

The board is headed by Mr. Mothabathe Hlalele in his capacity as the Principal Secretary (PS) for Public Works and Transport and other members include the Principal Secretaries for the ministries of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs, Mr. Tšeliso Mokoko and of Finance, Ms. Nthoateng Lebona, the Road Fund Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Nkekeletse Makara as well as the Acting Director General, Mr. Moeketsi Matsepe. 

Other members have been drawn from the private sector and they are Mr. Motsamai Rafoneke, a representative of the Lesotho Association of Engineers, Mrs. ‘Masekantši Mokhohlane, a representative of the Lesotho Civil Contractors Association, Mrs. ‘Mapula Makara from Bosiu Consult and Mr. Thabo Qhesi from Private Sector Foundation.

The Roads Directorate was established as a corporate body with perpetual succession and a
non-profit making public institution in 2010. Its key functions are road network planning, development and maintenance, quality assurance as well as construction and maintenance of footbridges.
