HABITAT,STANDARD LESOTHO BANK DONATE A HOUSE

The Habitat for Humanity Lesotho and Standard Lesotho Bank donated a two-roomed house, pit-latrine and a multipurpose African Clean Energy stove, amounting to M66,000.00 to Mr. Masilo Thulo Maphathe (67) living with disability.

The initiative forms part of these organisations’ efforts to help the Lesotho Government in achieving its mandate.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony held at Vuka Zenzela, Motsekuoa, the Minister of Social Development, Mrs. 'Matebatso Doti thanked both organisations for their assistance, saying her ministry on its own cannot meet the needs of all vulnerable people.

She commented that proper housing provides dignity and safety to owner hence appealed to the community to assist Mr. Maphathe to take good care of the house.

She further acknowledged Standard Lesotho Bank and Habitat for Humanity Lesotho for extending a helping hand, therefore appealing to private sector to dedicate at least 2 per cent of their budget to social protection.

The District Administrator for Maseru, Mr. Mpane Nthunya commended the partnership between Standard Lesotho Bank and Habitat for Humanity Lesotho and described it as fruitful, adding that it will also revive the Ministry of Social Development hence ensure that more vulnerable people receive help.

He said the partnership should be supported and made public, stressing that community leaders should participate in projects meant to assist those in need.

Also speaking, the Standard Lesotho Bank Chief Executive, Mr. Mpho Vumbukani said the project is part of their social responsibility and that it is not only about giving out money but to also take an active role in assisting the needy and ensuring that projects under their partnership are successful.

He noted that they have the responsibility to empower the people they serve, thus calling for cooperation and continuous hard work in ensuring the welfare of vulnerable people.

The National Director Habitat for Humanity Lesotho, Mrs. 'Mathabo Makuta said through their partnership they are able to help the Lesotho Government achieve its mandate as well as to provide care for the elderly people, orphaned and vulnerable children as well as people living with disability hence emphasised the need to provide proper housing for those living with disability.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary, Mr. Ramakau Maphathe thanked both Standard Lesotho bank and Habitat for Humanity Lesotho for the house, saying Mr. Maphathe (owner) will now be safe from strong winds and rains.

The partnership between Standard Lesotho Bank and Habitat for Humanity Lesotho dates as back as 2013 whereby about 25 vulnerable families were assisted to access decent shelter.

In April this year, the two organisations further agreed on a three year partnership in which Standard Lesotho Bank presented M400, 000.00 to Habitat for Humanity Lesotho to be used towards building six two-roomed houses with six ventilated improved pit latrines. According to the agreement, two houses will be build each year in these three years.

Mr. Maphathe's house is the first of the six houses to be built under this partnership.
