HIS MAJESTY ARRIVES FROM MALAWI

His Majesty King Letsie III and his delegation arrived in the country on Friday after being in Malawi for official visit from June 18 to 21, 2018.

In a brief interview, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Halebonoe Setṡabi said His Majesty visited Malawi in his capacity as United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Special Ambassador on Nutrition and also Nutrition Champion for the African Union (AU).

Mr. Setṡabi said during his visit, His Majesty toured Malawi with the intention to familiarise himself with their ways of living and interventions in fighting malnutrition as it is a huge challenge in most of the African countries.

He said Lesotho is still on baby steps in fighting malnutrition through the school feeding programme, commenting that good nutrition should not start in school but from the pregnancy hence stressed that if Basotho as a nation would know the importance of good nutrition and advocate for enhanced efforts to end malnutrition then they would be a malnutrition free society.

In addition, he said Lesotho has to work hard in ensuring that it reduces the 35 percent of stunted children, noting that this is a huge number considering the country’s population of close to two million. He said Malawi is now at 37 percent from 47 percent in 2010, describing this as a great achievement.

‘Unemployment, HIV / AIDS and other diseases are major contributing factors in malnutrition hence Basotho should have means and ways to eradicate poverty and invest all their efforts in agriculture’, Mr. Setṡabi commented.

During his visit in Malawi, His Majesty King Letsie III also met President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika of Malawi.

According to rankings produced by the United Kingdom Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with New Partners for African Development, Malawi is ranked second among the 45 African countries that are doing well in fighting malnutrition.

Present to welcome His Majesty included the Deputy Prime Minister, cabinet Ministers and other senior government officials.
