The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Mr. Motlohi Maliehe launched a Story and Photo Booth for the National Museum and Art Gallery.

The launch marked annual celebration of the International Archives Day which was held at the State Library on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Maliehe said Lesotho has not been having a National Museum and Art Gallery where archives are kept, but noting that they are available in homes and churches where they are kept, therefore stressed that archives are important for good governance and development of the economy and that they also help with identity.

Mr. Maliehe said the Booth will circulate throughout the country where members of the public will provide information on archives that contain Basotho history and ideas on how to best run the National Museum and Art Gallery. He said the Booth will be used to tell stories and take photos that will form part of the archives.

Mr. Maliehe appealed to Basotho to preserve archives for the future generation and the rest of the World. He further urged them to visit archives centres in order to improve their knowledge and skills.

Also speaking, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Mr. Monaphathi Maraka said archives show the country's culture and development, highlighting the need to make archives available and the history of Basotho to be known.

Mr. Maraka therefore called for promotion of Lesotho's development, culture and tourism through archives.

The Deputy Principal Secretary in the same ministry, Mrs. Moliehi Ntene noted that for a long time, archives have not been taken care of in the country so much that foreign nationals benefited from them, saying it is time archives are availed to Basotho.

Meanwhile, the Director Library and Archives, Mr. Motlalepula Lethibelane said archives contain history and that they help everyone to know where they come from and where they are going as Basotho, further saying archives can be used to build or destroy the economy.

He also mentioned that documents that are produced and used on daily basis form part of archives.

The International Archives Day is celebrated annually on June 09 with the aim to raise awareness among nations about the importance of records and archives.

Present to grace the event were the Ministry’s senior staff and employees.

This year's theme is: 'Archives, Governance, Memory and Heritage'.
