Honourable Lisemelo ‘Mapalesa Mothokho


Honourable ‘Mapalesa Mothokho is the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security. She was appointed to the position of Minister in March 2015.


Honourable Mthokho graduated from Utah State University where she obtained BSc Plant Science-Emphasis Hoticulture. In 1980, she graduated from the Lesotho Agricultural College with Diploma in Agriculture. She completed her primary education in 1976 while she secondary school from Hlotse High School in 1976.

Political Career

Honourable Mothokho’s interest in politics is something that is embedded in her up-bringing. Her grand-father ntate-moholo Lekhehle Matebele served the Basutholand Congress Party strongly believing in its founder Dr Ntsu Mokhehle. She grew up loving this and her desire became even stronger after 1998 elections.

Career outside Politics

She worked for the Government of Lesotho in the Ministry of Agriculture at different levels as an Extension Agent from 1980 to 1987. In 1990 upon completion of Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Plant Sciences, she was positioned at the headquarters to serve in the office of the Senior Horticulturist. In 1997, I joined the United Nations World Food Programme on secondment where I served as the National Programme Analyst in charge of the School Feeding Programme, Food for Work Programme (road construction) and the Disaster Management Programme. The programmes were meant to be developmental and act as budget support programmes to the Government of Lesotho in three government Ministries: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Works and the Disaster Management Authority.

In 2000, she came back to the ministry and assumed the responsibilities of Senior Crops Production Officer. She served in this position until April 2006 when she assumed the responsibilities of the Chief Crops Production Officer (Horticulture). In 2007, she assumed the responsibilities of the office of the Director of Crops Services the position she held until February 2015 when she left the Civil Service to join politics.


Honourable Mothokho is married and are blessed with three daughters and two grandchildren. She is a committed Christian who holds an office of an ordained Pastor at her church. She also likes gardening.
