GOVERNMENT ON DIGITALISATION OF SERVICES

The government of Lesotho is reconsidering its strategies and policies by digitalising government services.
This, Mr. Emmanuel Lesoma said when addressing participants on behalf of the Government Secretary at the workshop on the Digital Transformation Project (e-Government Phase II project).
Mr. Lesoma said the e-Government Phase II Project demonstrates yet another commitment of the Government of Lesotho to improve service delivery for Basotho, saying with Phase I of the project, a foundation infrastructure was built and a robust framework for digitalisation of government services.
He noted that as Chief Accounting officers with the government ministries, they are faced with a mammoth task of ensuring that they serve Basotho with the transparency needed by all, therefore growth in Communication and Information will assist the country to undergo transformation needed in all sectors thus socially and politically among others.
Mr. Lesoma, therefore, remarked that it is time for the government to introduce e-government for efficient services and that the workshop will help them to make informed decisions that will respond to citizen’s needs.
Speaking at the same occasion, the acting Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, Mrs. ‘Mabataung Khalane said they have discovered that on average, Lesotho citizens are becoming more digital serving.
She noted the government through the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, intends to provide Basotho with digital services at affordable costs.
She stated that phase I which commenced in 2014 and was expected to end in 2018, will be completed in August 2021, adding that this phase improved the delivery of public services.
Mrs. Khalane further pointed out that with phase II of this project which commenced in September 2020, they will introduce digital finance and financial inclusion, especially among the rural communities.
The second phase of the project is aimed at further expanding the digital infrastructure by constructing 48 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers in rural areas and laying a 96 KM Optic fiber between Roma and Thaba-Tseka.
The sensitization workshop on digital transformation and business process reengineering project was attended by Principal Secretaries from all government ministries.
