The Chinese Embassy in Lesotho has assured the Government of Lesotho that all Basotho nationals in China are safe and faced no harm in any way.
This is according to a press statement released on Monday by the National Emergency Command Centre following reports of mistreatment of African nationals in the city of Guangzhou, China.
NECC says the Lesotho government through the Ministry of Development Planning has been in touch with the Chinese Embassy in Lesotho to verify the information of mistreatment of the African nationals, and the Chinese Embassy has assured the government that currently all Basotho nationals in China are safe and faced no harm in any way.
The release further states that the government of the People’s Republic of China has made an undertaking to address the reported concerns of African nationals in the city of Guangzhou.
It further comments that it is considered view of the Lesotho government that the Chinese government will protect Basotho nationals within the context of long-standing relations and cooperation between China and Lesotho.
“It should be noted that in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 the government of China is enforcing quarantine measures and testing especially in the city of Guangzhou. We are confident that Basotho nationals who reside in China will fully comply with quarantine and testing procedures enforced by the Chinese government” NECC remarks.
