MINISTRY HOSTS ALBINISM ENVOY

The Ministry of Justice and Law through the Human Rights Unit will be hosting the Independent Expert on Enjoyment of Human Rights by Persons with Albinism (PWA) starting on Wednesday (April 10 – 19).

Information from the Ministry shows that the expert’s mandate in this regard includes identifying, exchanging and promoting good practices relating to the realisation of the human rights of people with albinism and their participation as equal members of society.

Additionally, the envoy will promote and report on developments and challenges to the realisation of the enjoyment of human rights by PWA, provide advisory services, technical assistance and capacity building to support national efforts for the realisation of the rights of PWA.

More awareness will further be raised on the rights of PWA to combat stereotypes, prejudices and harmful traditional practices and beliefs that hinder their enjoyment of human rights and participation in society on an equal basis with others according to the information from the Ministry of Justice.

This will further hold discussions with selected government Ministries, high schools, tertiary institutions and non-governmental organisations to mention but a few.

In July 2019, the Independent Expert published a report to the United Nations General Assembly (A/74/190) based on the questionnaire responses of 97 stakeholders.

Since the publication of the General Assembly report, the Independent Expert has continued to collect questionnaire responses from stakeholders across the globe. The present report is a compilation of all the questionnaire responses the Independent Expert has received since March 2019, in addition to research and findings from the Independent Expert’s country visits.

This report is an account of albinism human rights with more focus on issues of multiple and intersecting discrimination, right to life, access to justice, right to education, right to work and adequate standard of living, and right to health.
