EDUCATION AWARDS SADC ESSAY COMPETITION WINNERS

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) presented awards to three Basotho students for their sterling performance in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secondary Essay competition at the event held in Maseru on Monday.
The three students; Keketso Phosholi from Morifi Community High School in Mohale’s Hoek, Naleli Tsoamotse from the same school and Seipati Letuka from St. James High School in Mokhotlong have obtained positions one to three respectively and the awards included certificates and cash ranging from US$500, US$300 and US$200 respectively.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Training, Mr. Kotiti Liholo said the three learners deserve a special recognition for raising the national flag high hence congratulated them for their excellent performance, saying they all know that future lies in the hands of the young people.
He therefore stressed that by investing in youth, nurturing their God-given talents and mentoring them, they are paving the way to a brighter and better Lesotho, saying there is no better way of doing that other than through education, hence the expression, “Education is the key to success’.
He said topics approved for the SADC essay competitions are challenging and therefore require learners’ utmost dedication, diligence and determination in order to come out on top, saying these young, bright minds winners were not afraid of the magnitude of the task.
He commented that children’s participation in competitions of this nature is very important as it hones their reading, writing and research skills and ultimately prepares them for overall excellent performance at school and at tertiary level where such skills are essential.
He therefore urged all learners across the country to participate in these competitions as they do cultivate the skills that learners need to be the best they can be.
At the same event, one of the winners, Naleli Tsoamotse said it was not easy but they used every spare time they had to work on the essay through researches, adding that their success comes from their hard work, dedication and determination.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mr. Relebohile Tsoamotse said they are thankful for the work of their children, saying this is a sign that hard work pays.
He thanked Morifi Community High School Principal, teachers and school board for the support that they have shown to their children, urging the students to take their awards as an encouragement that good things are worked for.
The purpose of the SADC Secondary essay writing competition is to broaden knowledge of the secondary school-going population on SADC activities and encourage learners in the SADC region to understand the role of SADC and disseminate information on SADC in order to support the process of regional co-operation and integration.
The SADC Essay competition dates as far back as 1996 and Lesotho has been an active participant. Last year, two Basotho learners obtained positions one and three respectively.
The next year (2020) essay competition topic is, “How can a conducive environment for Industrial development and intra-regional trade, create jobs for SADC citizens?”
