GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES MILLIONS FOR DISABILITY GRANT

The Minister of Social Development on Monday launched the Disability Grant amounting to M10, 500 000 maloti for people living with disabilities in Maseru.
In her statement, Mrs. ‘Matebatso Doti said the government has allocated M10, 500 000 maloti for the implementation of this grant.
Mrs. Doti said the launching of the Disability Grant come after the signing of the United Union Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
She said it is through this convention that the government of Lesotho in partnership with different stakeholders have drafted the Person with Disabilities Equity Act 2021, which emphasise observing the rights of the disabled as the main factor of this Act.
“Within this Act, there are clear pillars that highlight care and protection of people living with disabilities,” she explained.
These pillars, she said include the provision of disability grants to people living with disabilities, adding that the Disability Grant is based on sections 44 to 49 of the Person with Disabilities Equity Act 2021.
The Minister said the maximum grant allowance is M400.00 maloti and that this grant will be paid quarterly like standard grant allowances.
She noted that her Ministry is in the process of launching digital payments, where the recipients will receive their grants via mobile money transfer services (Mpesa and Ecocash) and the banks.
Further giving details about digital payments, Mrs. Doti said those who already use mobile money transfer services will receive their grants on a monthly basis, saying the Ministry is preparing for those who do not have access to them to have them.
Speaking about the criteria to select beneficiaries, Mrs. Doti noted that her Ministry will hold workshops with the public regarding the distribution of the grant and those recipients will undergo a medical examination.
Currently, the Ministry of Social Development provides services like Child Grants Programmes, Old Age Pension Grant and Social Care Grant.
