GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO IMPLEMENT SDGs

The Government of Lesotho remains committed to implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are now aligned with the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) II.
This, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Development of Planning Mr. Sello Tsukulu said at the opening of SDGs training.
He said the effective planning for SDGs rests on the holistic understanding of the current processes, institutions, actors, policies, mandates and other factors that affect the implementation of the SDGs.
He added that in particular, understanding the National Planning and Budgeting process is critical so to contextualize the global agenda into national frameworks.
The Principal Secretary highlighted that Lesotho’s commitment to both SDGs and the Africa Union Agenda 2063 is found in its NSDP II, 2018/19 to 2020/22/23 and its associate financing strategy.
He further stated that NSDPII aims to leave no one behind while embracing gender and human rights development approach consistent with its Constitution, saying to fast-track the implementation of SDGs, the inclusion of all actors is vital.
Speaking at the same occasion, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative Ms. Nessie Golakai-Gould said the alignment of SDGs with NSDP II is a national blueprint as it promotes the achievement of SDGs.
She noted that the training will assist participants to learn more about in-depth comprehension and roles to be played to ensure achievement of SDGs, stressing the importance of monitoring, evaluation and assessment tool for effective implementation for SDGs attainment.
She further revealed that COVID-19 has interrupted progress made as it has increased levels of poverty, hunger and unemployment, adding that the training will assist Lesotho to recover.
SDGs are an ambitious set of 17 goals and 169 targets that were defined and developed through an unprecedented dialogue among the UN Member States, local authorities, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders.
Through, the NSDP II, Basotho set employment creation and inclusive growth as the overriding goal for combating poverty and inequality. The key pillars for achieving this goal are promoting inclusive and sustainable growth (All 17 SDG), strengthening human capital (SDG 3, 4, 5, 10), building enabling infrastructure (SDG 6, 7, 9, 11) and strengthening governance and accountability( SDG 5, 16,17).
