GOVT URGES BASOTHO IN SA TO STAY PUT

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lesego Makgothi has urged Basotho who are currently in South Africa (SA) to stay there until lockdown period ends in that country and while the government is establishing means to assist them.
Mr. Makgothi said the government has realised that some of Basotho are stranded in South Africa due to a countrywide lockdown, saying in order to assist them, the government has among others ordered the Ambassador of Lesotho in SA to study the situation and negotiate with the SA Government on how to assist them (Basotho).
He said, to enhance ways to help all Basotho outside the country, the government has established a Cabinet committee to deal with the issue and ensure that all Basotho outside the country are timeously assisted.
He mentioned that the Government of Lesotho has approached the SA Government together with other international organisations including the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to establish how Basotho outside the country especially those in SA can be assisted.
The Minister said all Lesotho Diplomats in SA have been ordered to establish the conditions and numbers of Basotho in desperate need so that the government can find means to assist them.
He added that the Government of Lesotho is also in negotiations with the SA Government so that Basotho whose time in SA has expired due to the lock-down be exempted.
He therefore appealed to Basotho to work together with the office of the Lesotho Embassy in SA by providing them with full details of their conditions in order to facilitate the government’s assistance measures, adding that fully detailed forms will be available on-line.
In conclusion, Mr. Makgothi urged all Basotho to comply with the SA’s laws and regulations, which are intended to contain COVID-19, further appealing to them to join hands in the fight against this pandemic.
