HER MAJESTY LEADS TREE PLANTING IN MOUNT MOOROSI

More than 2, 000 trees comprising forest and fruit trees were planted at Sekhonyana Primary School and Thoteng in Mount Moorosi within the Telle Community Council on Thursday..
The activity which was led by Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso took place in the Quthing district marks the annual National Tree Planting Day commemoration.
Speaking at the event, Her Majesty said the activity is in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as tree planting promotes a healthy environment, prevents soil erosion and promotes adaption to climate change.
Her Majesty said it is the responsibility of Basotho to plant trees as this helps in addressing environmental challenges thus preserving ranges, water sources and land degradation.
She therefore urged the public to protect trees as each tree absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen and thus reducing global warming.
Her Majesty thanked the World Vision International Lesotho for the support in all activities intended to promote education and fight against child marriage, therefore appealing to Basotho as a nation to join hands to further promote such activities.
She urged parents and guardians to be open and become friends with their children as this will make it easy to support them overcome their challenges.
She further urged the pupils to focus on their studies for a brighter future while adults should work as a team in guiding children, saying guidance and upbringing of Children is a social responsibility.
Speaking at the same event, the Acting Principal Chief of Quthing, Chief Toka Letsie expressed gratitude that the planting of trees took place further appealing for joined efforts in the  protection of planted trees and thanked World Vision International – Lesotho for support in developmental activities in the country, saying the efforts are highly appreciated.
The Acting District Education Manager, Mr. Lebohang Kala said the event is in line with the new syllabus as it includes environment issues such as tree planting, hence appealed for planting of more trees in response to negative impact of global warming.
Ms. Teboho Lekalakala, who is the Acting World Vision-Lesotho Director said the theme for the day is ‘Trees and Education’ hence why the event has been held at schools, adding that trees among others lessen disasters and promote a healthy environment conducive for learning.
She said more than 58 000 trees have been planted countrywide under the organisation’s initiative to promote tree planting which started in 2015.
The event was organised by World Vision International – Lesotho through Mokotjomela Area Development Project in collaboration with the District Department of Education and District Department of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation.
Present at the event also included school children, public servants from different government departments and Non-Governmental Organisations and the public.
More than 2 000 trees were planted at Thoteng while 60 peach fruits trees were planted at Sekhonyana primary school.
