HIS MAJESTY LEADS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION

His Majesty King Letsie III led celebration of the Lesotho 53rd Independence Anniversary held at Koete in Matsieng whereby soil conservation works took place.
His Majesty was joined by members of the Diplomatic Mission in Lesotho, cabinet ministers, chiefs, Senior Government officials, members of the security agencies and the public.
Meanwhile, activities of the day were preceded by the launch of the rehabilitation of a 3 Kilometre Makeneng-Matsieng Road by Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, Mr. Litṥoane Litṥoane.
Speaking at the launch, the Mr. Litṥoane said the rehabilitation of Makeneng-Matsieng Road is part of the resolution to construct connecting roads in different villages country-wide, saying about M2 million has been earmarked for such activities after it was discovered that various areas lack such roads and that the existing ones need rehabilitation.
He therefore appealed to communities in the area to protect and take good care of the road so that it will benefit all in area.
Meanwhile, in Mohale’s Hoek, the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Monyane Moleleki launched the construction of a 3 kilometres road in the Mohale’s Hoek constituency.
The road starts from BEDCO offices in Motse-Mocha and ends at Likuena LECSA High school in the Mohale’s Hoek district.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Moleleki said the celebration is intended for the community to delight over independence where most needed developments are implemented.
‘Lesotho has for 53 years of independence, managed to construct over 3000 kilometres tar roads throughout the country as against less than 2kms built by the British colonial rule for 99 years of its reign,’ he said.
He said such development achieved following attainment of independence is highly appreciated, however saying the remaining challenge is to construct and maintain tar roads in villages such as the one in place.
In Mokhotlong, the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Chief Thesele Maseribane launched the construction of a 5 km gravel road from Phutha-Nkotoane which is expected to benefit residents from 12 villages and three schools in the area.
Chief Maseribane also toured nearby donga also under rehabilitation.
He said this year, Lesotho marks her 53rd independence, saying she (Lesotho) has over the years changed governments until the current 4×4 government which in its cabinet sittings, decided to celebrate this year’s independence through rehabilitation activities.
On the other hand, the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Chief Joang Molapo who celebrated Independence Day with the Berea community in Teyateyaneng said observing the Independence Day is about celebrating the oneness of Basotho as a nation.
Chief Joang commented that Basotho have allowed themselves to be separated by many things hence a need to unite in celebration and become proud of our nationality.
He expressed gratitude to all who spared their busy schedule so that they would take part in community activities meant to promote a clean environment.
The 53rd Independence Day celebration through rehabilitation activities also took place in the districts of Botha-Bothe, Mafeteng, Quthing, Qacha’s Nek and Thaba-Tseka.
Lesotho commemorates her Independence Day annually on October 04 since she gained her independence from Britain in 1966.
