In a bid to fight crime against land ownership, Land Administration Authority (LAA) in collaboration with the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) and the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Maseru.
Speaking at the event, LAA Director General, Mrs. ‘Mats’ireletso Lepheana said the MOU is intended to fight land crimes like fraud, corruption and many other issues related to land administration.
She said as stakeholders entering into partnership they should be able to exchange information to address crime relating to land which seems to be escalating.
She noted that the MOU is also going to assist in law enforcement on land issues as well as to help provide transparent and efficient services to their clients. She further assured that they are serious about fighting crime therefore encouraging Basotho across the country to provide information regarding land crimes within their communities.
Echoing same sentiments, Commissioner of Police Holomo Molibeli said it is within their mission statement to protect and ensure safety of Basotho and their property.
He commended LAA for finding it fitting to engage other stakeholders in fighting crime against land issues, saying land is Lesotho’s treasure that seems to be engulfed by crime lately.
”Police alone cannot fight and eradicate crime but it is through working together with stakeholders that we can ensure that we have a crime free Lesotho,” he added.
He therefore appealed to employees of the three entities to ensure that the collaboration is sustainable for the benefit of Basotho and Lesotho
Also speaking, DCEO Director, Advocate Sefako Seema applauded LAA for joining in the fight against crime, saying they would not uproot it alone hence appreciate cooperation from their counterparts so that at the end they should attract the public to join this fight.
He said land defines Basotho nation and if nothing is done about criminal activities surrounding land issues then Lesotho is doomed.
Advocate Seema urged all that are involved in corruption, fraud and theft to refrain, saying today marks the end of their dubious activities.
He appealed to all to ensure that the MOU is implemented to the core so as to free Basotho and Lesotho from crime.
DCEO and LMPS have also signed MOU with the Lesotho Revenue Authority (LRA).
