LESOTHO ATTACHES IMPORTANCE TO HER FRIENDSHIP-HIS MAJESTY

Lesotho attaches great importance to the friendship and cooperation between herself and Germany as well as their people.
His Majesty King Letsie III said this when accepting letters of Credence from the Ambassador-Designate of Germany to Lesotho at the Royal Place in Maseru on Thursday.
He said the presence of Dr Martin Schafer signifies his country’s great desire to maintain and further strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and cooperation between these two countries.
His Majesty added that those relations are based on their shared values and principles of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, sovereign equality of the states and promotion and respect for basic human rights and fundamental freedoms.
He noted the two countries should enhance cooperation within the framework of multilateral fora where they share common membership, such as the United Nations, with a view to harmonising their common positions.
He said their strength lies in their united and collective approach to issues which affect all of humanity, such as global peace and security, global economic growth and prosperity and climate change.
He said the assistance from Germany enabled Lesotho to make visible strides in very critical areas of development which include decentralisation programmes, which are aimed at deepening democracy, combating HIV and AIDS as well as developing small and medium enterprises.
His Majesty noted that the assistance of Germany clearly demonstrates that they acknowledge and support their efforts towards deepening democracy and strengthening democratic institutions in Lesotho.
When presenting his credentials, the Ambassador-Designate of Germany to Lesotho, Dr Schafer said their cooperation focuses on good governance and decentralisation and thus contributing to combat poverty.
He added that German government is committed to further deepening the already strong existing ties between the two countries, at both the bilateral level and involving the partnership between Lesotho and the European Union.
He said their regular contacts at government and civil-society level also cover the important role of human rights, global issues and other topics of mutual interest, saying in more than 40-year of bilateral development cooperation a total of over 200 million Euro will have been made available to Lesotho by Germany.
Dr Schafer said Germany is committed both nationally and within European Union (EU) framework, to contributing to the efforts of the African Union (AU) and the African regional organisations including Southern African Development Community (SADC) to fulfil their mandate in the areas of human rights and social economic development.
Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches.
Lesotho and Germany have maintained warm and friendly diplomatic relations since 1975.
