LESOTHO COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY

The United Nation Development Program (UNDP)) in collaboration with the Development for Peace Education (DPE) celebrated International Peace Day at the event held in Maseru on Tuesday.
This year’s theme is ‘Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World’
The International Peace Day is celebrated with the aim of spreading world peace, harmony and awareness to stay away from war and violence. Its main objective is to establish peace and non-violence on the whole earth.
Speaking at the event, the UNDP Resident Representative in Lesotho, Ms. Betty Wabunoha Said International Peace comes at a time when humanity is in crisis and COVID-19 has claimed over four million lives, saying the pandemic has shattered households and national economies alike, conflicts are spinning out of control and inequalities and poverty are growing.
She said the world is faced with a planetary emergency in climate change and struggle with mistrust in facts and science, noting that each crisis threatens to pull humanity apart at a time when solidarity is needed more than ever
Ms. Betty (why Betty not Wabunoha) therefore urged everyone to choose peace, saying it is the only option to repair the broken world hence She called on combats around the world to lay down their arms and observe a day of Global Ceasefire.
She stressed that the world needs to focus on fighting humanity’s common enemy COVID-19, emphasizing that solidarity is also needed to end this pandemic thus; by urgently delivering lifesaving vaccines and treatment, and support countries in the long road to recovery ahead.
Ms. Wabunoha remarked that the world needs to make peace with nature and with one another, lift each other up, instead of knocking each other down and to live up, finally to the true promise and potential of humanity.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairperson of DPE, Mr. Mafokane Ramakhula thanked all for participating at this event, saying DPE is involved in promoting peace.
On the same token, the Lesia High School Principal, Mr. Moteuli Mathafeng said the time is now to rebuild the world and commend to the best of humanity so to stop conflicts and hunger, specially in schools.
He said everyone is responsible to build and impart knowledge to young people saying they are lucky as teachers as they have the opportunity to teach children from young age.
He said most parents lose their jobs due COVID-19 and they have children to send to school, saying it is their responsibility as teachers to protect student’s dignity regardless of their home situation.
The UN general assembly has declared 21 September as International Peace Day since 1954.
