LESOTHO COMMEMORATES WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

The Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS) on Monday joined the world to commemorate World Blood Donor Day under the theme ‘Give Blood and Keep the World Biting’ at the event held in Maseru.
The purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness across the world about the need for safe blood transfusion and to express gratitude to voluntary blood donors.
In an interview, LBTS Manager, Mrs.  Maleqhoa Nyopa said it is important to donate blood as it saves the lives of many patients in need of blood.
Mrs. Nyopa mentioned that for one to be able to donate blood, such an individual must have enough iron, B12 minerals and be healthy.
She noted that patients need blood every day especially women as when giving birth lose a lot of blood hence need blood more than everyone, adding that car accidents also occur daily whereby people involved lose blood.
She remarked that blood donation in the country is still a major problem as people lack knowledge on the importance of donating blood hence the scarcity of blood donors which she noted results in a shortage of blood.
Mrs. Nyopa said the unit has introduced a new strategy that enforce relatives and family members of the patient in need of blood to donate blood.
She commended the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF) and Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) for always donating blood wherever they visit their premises.
She therefore appealed to Basotho to donate blood, adding that a healthy person can donate blood three times a year.
World Blood Donor Day is commemorated annually on June 14 by all World Health Organization (WHO) member states.
