LESOTHO PARTICIPATES IN SA NEIGHBOURS’ VIRTUAL MEETING

The Prime Minister, Dr Motsoahae Thomas Thabane on Friday participated in a virtual consultative meeting convened by the President of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss responses on COVID-19 pandemic with heads of state and government from neighbouring countries.
Countries that attended the meeting are Angola, Eswatini, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe with Lesotho and South Africa included.
Addressing the media post virtual meeting, the Minister of Communication, Science and Technology, also Chairperson of Cabinet Sub Committee National Emergency Command Centre, Chief Thesele Maseribane said the meeting agreed on some issues that include job security for migrant labourers, sharing of information on countries’ response to Coronvirus and COVID-19 Recovery Strategy concerning the economy.
Also speaking at the briefing, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lesego Makgothi said the meeting agreed that Diplomatic Passport holders could still travel whenever it is vitally needed and that there will still be rapid tests done at the borders.
The meeting according to Mr. Makgothi also agreed on the establishment of the portal where African countries will share their information on responses to COVID-19 pandemic.
He again mentioned that countries agreed on the need for free trade on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in response to COVID-19 pandemic.
On the other hand, the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Mokhele Moletsane said the meeting further agreed that members of the public will only be allowed to cross to other countries when seeking medical care.
Present to represent the Government of Lesotho in this meeting included; Chief Maseribane, Mr. Makgothi, Mr. Moletsane, the Minister of Health, Mr. Nkaku Kabi and Dr Moeketsi Majoro who is the Minister of Finance.
Lesotho has to date not registered cases of COVID-19 but has taken prevention measures like nationwide lockdown to fight the pandemic.
