The Minister of Development Planning, Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane has appealed to the community of Thaba-Moea Constituency in Thaba-Tseka to be committed in agricultural production for consumption and commercial purposes.
Mr. Mochoboroane was speaking during the launch of Agricultural Census Pilot held at Ha Peterose, Lesobeng in Thaba-Tseka. He said agriculture is one of the key factors to reduce poverty while also can develop the economy.
He said this census aims to establish production of agricultural inputs in the country in order to reflect the state of food production in the country.
“Basotho used to produce in bulk in agriculture products for consumption and commercial,” he stressed, noting that Basotho should avoid depending on imports as it does not reflect their commitment in agriculture but also hampers the country’s economic growth.
Speaking at the same occasion, a Member of Parliament for Thaba-Moea Constituency, Mr. Sethuntša Peea said the census is launched in hard to reach areas so to find more about the livelihoods of the villagers.
He therefore expressed hope that the data collected will help government to make informed decision and policies that will benefit and support Basotho, hence appealed to Thaba-Moea community to support data collectors during the data collection process in order to address poverty.
The Director of Bureau of Statistics (BOS), Mrs. ’Malehloa Molato said statistics show that half of Basotho live in poverty while a quarter lives in extreme poverty hence the collection of data is an important exercise.
