The Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship, Mr. Lits’oane Lits’oane led the sod turning of the 25 Kilometre roads construction amounting to over M13 million at Maqokho, Kubung in Quthing on Friday.
The roads construction, which is expected to be completed by March 2020 is intended to benefit residents from more than 30 villages in the Kubung area, Telle Community Council and Mount Moorosi Constituency.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Lits’oane expressed gratitude that the launch of Kubung roads construction plan is owned by Community Councilors through the influence of different Kubung communities.
He therefore urged Community Councilors to work hand in hand with public servants who he said are experts in development.
The Minister further commended the District Planner and District Council Secretary for guiding councilors in coming up with a plan that will benefit the Community, saying councilors should also be guided so to be familiar with Local Government Law as this will make it easy for them to undertake their responsibilities in line with the Law.
Also speaking was the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Chief Thesele Maseribane who expressed need for the Ministry of Local Government to implement decentralisation of services including job creation as this will enhance fight against unemployment which he said led to many of the Quthing resident to seek jobs in South Africa.
Chief Maseribane said there are various types of machinery in the district which could be used for production of different products like dried fruits and fruit juice for income generation thus applauding the Ministry of Local Government for the initiative to construct these roads as it will enable ease transportation of such products to prospective buyers within and outside the district.
The Member of Parliament for Mount Moorosi Constituency, Mrs. Nts’alla Mafa thanked the government for initiating the construction of roads in the area, saying it is indeed a good work. She however appealed for construction of a bridge to Ha-Makoae village in the constituency.
When completed, the Kubung Road Project is intended to address a long time challenge in the area as there will be a by-pass connecting Quthing and Qacha’s Nek along Main South Road especially when heavy snow has blocked Lebelonyane road thus enabling movement between the villages of Ha-Mopeli-Maqokho and Ha-Mohale.
