NMDS LIMITS SPONSORSHIP FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS AT NUL, FOKOTHI

The National Manpower Development Secretariat will reduce the admission list of first year students due for sponsorship at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) and Lerotholi Polytechnic (Fokothi).
The Minister of Development Planning, Mr. Tlohelang Aumane announced this when addressing the press conference held at the Ministry’s premises on Friday.
He said the ministry has decided to reduce the list of admitted first year students to be sponsored at the two institutions because these institutions decided to increase tuition fees despite NMDS request that all higher learning institutions should not increase fees. He said Fokothi has increased the fees by 10 percent while NUL increased by 20 percent
The affected faculties at NUL include that of Law, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences with courses like Certificate of Statistics and others like Urban and Regional Planning as well as other courses offered at the Institute of Extra Mural Studies (IEMS).
Meanwhile, at Fokothi, the affected courses will include those  offered at the School of Business and Enterprise, thus; Hospitality, Hotel Management, Business Studies and other courses.
Mr. Aumane attributed the ministry’s decision to financial constraints, saying NMDS was allocated M590 million this financial year (2019/2020)  and that it has already paid M890 million for students studying in local institutions hence has a shortfall of M300 Million.
He noted that to find the shortfall of M300 Million, no first year students will be sponsored to study in South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania this year, saying scholarships will be provided to students who will pursue their studies locally.
Again, Mr. Aumane mentioned that students who study abroad and are fully sponsored will also be affected as they will no longer receive $200 (M2000).
The Ministry of Development Planning aims to achieve high, shared and sustainable employment creating economic growth and development through results oriented national development plans, policy advice to government, mobilisation and coordination of resources.
