PM IN NEW YORK FOR UNGA

The Prime Minister, Dr Motsoahae Thabane and his delegation left the country for New York, United States of America (USA) on Friday to attend the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Speaking with the agency before departure at the Moshoeshoe I International Airport, Press Attaché in the Prime Minister, Mr. Thabo Thakalekoala said Dr Thabane will join heads of state and government from 193 member countries of the UN with the intention to work together on comprehensive collection of international issues covered by the Charter of the UN such as peace, security and development amongst others.
He said amongst issues to be dealt with include Climate Change as the UN Secretary-General will convene a Climate Change Summit, saying climate change has become a concern affecting humans, animals and the environment negatively.
He mentioned that after the opening of the 74th general debate, there will also be a meeting of the UN High-level Political forum on Sustainable Development, adding that there will also be a dialogue on financing for development as well as a high-level meeting on the elimination of nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, Mr. Thakalekoala said while in New York, the Prime Minister will also meet Ireland and Kenya Presidents in order to enhance relations for growth and development of Lesotho.
The Prime Minister is on Thursday expected to deliver Lesotho’s National Statement to the assembly while also briefing members on progress made in issues of reforms.
The Prime Minister and his delegation that includes the First Lady was seen off by the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Monyane Moleleki, cabinet Ministers as well as members of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service and of the Lesotho Defence Force management. The Lesotho delegation is expected to come back home on September 30.
UNGA is an annual event held on September where member states meet for a session in New York.
