PM TOURS AMITOFO CARE CENTRE

The Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro commended the management of Amitofo Care Centre (ACC) for the excellent job of taking care of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVCs).
Dr Majoro made these remarks during his first tour at Amitofo Care Centre in Mafeteng on Thursday last week where he said for a long time, he has been passing the place not knowing that the centre has such beautiful buildings and equipment of its kind.

The Amitofo Care Centre, which provides school and residence facilities for orphaned and vulnerable children started its operations in 2010.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Dr Majoro applauded the centre for the care it provides to these children, saying the children are well taken care of even though their parents have passed away hence urged them to be thankful and to turn their vulnerability into an opportunity for a better and brighter future.
He said they are fortunate to be brought up by this caring centre that annually takes them overseas for educational tours so to exchange ideas and knowledge with their counterparts in those countries.
The Prime Minister, therefore, thanked the management of the centre for the excellent job they are doing, appealing to them to continue keeping good relations with members of the community in the area for the benefit of peace.
Speaking at the same occasion, the Minister of Social Development, Mrs. ‘Matebatso Doti said all children accommodated at the centre have been lawfully recruited and accepted at the centre.
Mrs. Doti said the centre works harmoniously with the Ministry in ensuring the wellbeing of  these children, saying their cooperation started some years ago when the centre opened.
Speaking on behalf of the Amitofo Care Centre, the Chairperson of the Board, Dr Pakalitha Mosisili thanked the Prime Minister and his delegation for visiting the centre, saying this centre provides care to about 200 orphaned and vulnerable children.
Dr Mosisili noted that the children are only released on holidays to visit their guardians and relatives, however saying with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have not been allowed such visits and that to date no child has disappeared from the centre.
He however mentioned some of the challenges facing the centre thus citing water crisis, which he noted  has affected the administration and daily activities of the centre negatively.

Again, he said proper road infrastructure to the centre is another major challenge including land for the construction of a health science teaching building.

Meanwhile, as part of the Prime Minister’s tour in the Mafeteng district, Dr Majoro led the cleaning campaign in Mafeteng and later met with Mafeteng business community to find out about their challenges in business. He also visited Malea-lea in Matelile where he distributed food parcels for the needy in the area.

The Amitofo Care Centre is financially supported by Amitofo Charity Association. It was launched in 2010 with 25 orphaned and vulnerable children aged from four years to six years. Currently, the centre provides care to more than 200 orphaned and vulnerable children.
