PM URGES FOR QUALITY ON INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN

The design of infrastructure including bridges should be of quality standards to avoid easily destructed when disasters occur.
The Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro said this when speaking at the sod-turning ceremony of the Northern Districts Disaster Roads Rehabilitation project which he officiated at Thaba Li-mpe in Mokhotlong on Friday.
He said the reconstruction of the two mini bridges along the Khubelu river should be of better quality by design as compared to those that were damaged by the floods earlier this year.
Dr Majoro said the government decided to name the initiative to redress the situation on damaged roads and bridges ‘Operation Phau Manyatse’ in honour of the late Forere Motloheloa, Famo musician of Berea who died in February this year.
He said the operation will be implemented countrywide to bring the situation back to normal for communities that were affected by heavy rains.
He urged the contractor engaged in the reconstruction of the bridges to complete them within the scheduled period of five months.
Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Lebohang Monaheng introduced KR Holdings which is a construction company that has been awarded the reconstruction work for the two mini bridges.
He said the actual work will commence in three weeks’ time after the sod turning, adding that the Lesotho government allocated M14, 693,778.92 for design and construction and erosion protection works as well as demolition of existing damaged structures.
Mr. Monaheng mentioned that 90 Basotho working as labourers will be employed during the re-construction of these bridges
Also speaking was the Member of Parliament for Senqu Constituency, Ms. Likeleli Tampane, also the Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation who thanked the Prime Minister for performing the sod-turning ceremony which marks the construction of bridges to enable people from different places to travel and perform their businesses.
She said the destruction of the bridges made it difficult for communities to access essential services such as health at the Moli-ka-liko clinic while donkeys were used to transport the medication to the clinic.
Ms. Tampane also requested for construction of a road leading to the clinic and other villages, saying it is also in poor condition.
Some members of the community said they are happy with the construction of the bridges, adding that they were unable to access essential services such as health and others.
There are 19 bridges that were damaged and washed away during the heavy rains that caused overflowing in rivers like Khubelu, Senqu and Moremoholo rivers in the Mokhotlong district.
Present at the occasion included Cabinet Ministers and senior government officials.
