PM WELCOMES UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR

The incoming United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mrs. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro in Maseru on Wednesday.
Mrs. Khozi Mukwashi is replacing Mr. Salvator Niyonzima, whose tour of duty ended in January 2021.
In his welcome remarks, Dr Majoro said Lesotho and the United Nations have a long-standing relationship on a number of projects.
He said he is looking forward to continue with the warm working relationships that will help in the development of the country.
Dr Majoro mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the majority of the nation in so many ways that some have lost their jobs therefore there are projects that the country must develop in order to tackle the unemployment issues.
When conveying her words of gratitude, Ms. Amanda Khozi Mukwashi said that in the four weeks that she has been in Lesotho, she has been able to engage with relevant stakeholders as a way of familiarising herself with the country.
She said she is ready to put all efforts and resources of the UN to work on transforming the challenges that the country is mentioned to be having.
Meanwhile, Ms Mukwashi remarked that the country has an abundance of natural resources that can contribute massively to the development of the country.
Ms. Mukwashi served more than 25 years in public service, working on poverty alleviation, tackling injustice and inequalities at the intergovernmental and non-governmental level while holding leadership positions at the United Nations and externally.
Within the Organization, she served with the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV) in Germany as Chief, Volunteer Knowledge and Innovation, as well as Chief of Advisory Services. She has also worked on a country support programme on gender, population, and development with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Zambia.
Outside the United Nations, she most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Christian Aid, international development and humanitarian non-governmental organization working in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Prior to that, she occupied senior positions with global non-profit Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO International), as well as the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa in Zambia.
