POLICE MINISTER RESIGNS

The Minister of Police and Public Safety, Mrs. ‘Mampho Mokhele has resigned from her ministerial position as well as Senate.
This was confirmed by the Press Attaché in Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Thabo Thakalekoala on Friday. Speaking in an interview, Mr. Thakalekoala said Mrs. Mokhele resigned from both positions on Tuesday this week adding that Minister of Defence and National Security, Mr. Tefo Mapesela will act as Minister of Police until such position has been filled.
He said her resignation comes after the former Minister has been chosen to be Counselor of Lesotho in Dublin Ireland, saying this is purely another assignment given to Mrs. Mokhele by the government.
He added that the government found it fitting to send her to Ireland to deal with reforms issues especially security reforms due to her capability, potential as well as experience in security issues after her long time serving as police boss.
‘She is also going to seek support of Ireland and other European countries to Lesotho in the reforms process in particular security reforms,’ he added.
Mrs. Mokhele was sworn in as the Senator in the 10th Parliament as well as Minister in July 2017 and she was among the eight women cabinet ministers in the third coalition government since 2012 general parliamentary elections.
Currently, there are only four women cabinet ministers following resignation of former Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation Minister, Mrs. ‘Mamotsie Motsie in August last year, release of former Minister of Social Development, Mrs. ‘Matebatso Doti from her position as a minister in February this year and resignation of former Deputy Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation Mrs. Rethabile Marumo-Mokaeane in March.
