ROAD SAFETY STRATEGIC PLAN TO DETERMINE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MANDATE-PS

The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Mr. Maile Masoebe says the Road Safety Strategic Plan will determine the implementation of the mandate of road safety in the future.
Mr. Masoebe said this when officially opening the workshop on Strategic Plan Validation held on Wednesday at the Ministry’s premises Ha-Foso.  The workshop was aimed at discussing the strategy to be used when addressing issues concerning road safety in general.
He thanked the Department of Road Safety for its commitment and support in making sure that the ministry achieves its mandate, therefore, wished them well in their future endeavours.
Mr. Masoebe said the workshop will help participants to reflect and determine whether the department is progressing based on what is happening regionally and globally.
“The significance of the strategic plans lies in the fact that the successful development and implementation ensured the commitment of the state in enhancing its contributions aimed at archiving the set targets; implementation of integrated policies and public concern,” he said.
He further noted that the existence of coordination, high-level commitment and adequate financing models will ensure implementation of intended incomes.
Mr. Masoebe stressed that the Road Safety Strategic Plan and its targets are designed to provide guidance on key road safety interventions which save lives.
Giving the background of the event, the Director Road Safety, Dr Kinini Mathews said in December 2019 they held the first summit where they prepared the Strategic Plan of 2020 – 2030.
She said the main purpose of the summit was to find ways in which they could prevent and stop the high rate of road accidents in the country.
She added that the Road Safety Strategic Plan aligns with the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) II and United Nations (UN) strategies global.
Dr Mathews said the Road Safety Strategic Plan consists of five goals thus: building road safety management capacity, improving the safety of roads infrastructure and broader transport networks, developing the safety of vehicles, enhancing the behaviour of road users and improving post-crash response.
Participants at the workshop included the District Administrators from the ten districts of the country, members of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) and Road Safety officials.
