RURAL ELECTRIFICATION IMPROVES SERVICE DELIVERY

As part of initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in line with SDG 7: affordable and clean energy, the Minister of Energy and Meteorology on Friday last week launched rural electrification project at Nokong within the Mosalemane Constituency in Berea.
About 670 households from eight villages of Nokong Moreneng, Masenkeng, Taung and Nts’irele are going to benefit from this project which is expected to be completed in July.
Addressing the public during the launch, the Minister of Energy and Meteorology, Mr. Mokoto Hloaele said the government is committed to bringing services to the people, saying rural electrification project serves as part of efforts to ensure service deliver.
He urged the communities to establish electricity schemes, saying such schemes make easy for government to implement electrification project.
Mr. Hloaele said the rural electrification project will be implemented steadily until it covers all households countrywide.
Furthermore, the Minister has urged the contractor awarded the contract for transparency during the implementation of the project thus to ensure that villagers will benefit in jobs opportunities to be created in the process.
Also speaking was a Member of Parliament for Mosalemane Constituency, Mr. Sam Rapapa who said electricity is one of the basic needs that should be supplied to make life easy for the communities.
Mr. Rapapa thanked the Government for the implementation of this project in the constituency, saying villagers should be grateful for this development as it is going to improve their lives.
He therefore appealed to villagers in the area to protect this project and avoid vandalizing equipment, saying electricity connectivity will not only beautify the villages but will also help towards prevention of crime at night and to improve the level of education as schools will be able to use computers  hence introduce computer lessons.
He said the day marks history for Nokong community because this is the first time ever electricity project comes in their constituency through assistance of the government.
He however expressed concern that besides electricity, communities in the constituency experience hardships regarding transport as lack of infrastructure like roads remains a challenge in the area, therefore appealed to relevant ministries for consideration of such public needs.
Speaking at the same occasion, the Chairperson of Nokong Electricity Scheme Committee, Mr. Mokone Lipholo said the villagers are more than delighted that their efforts to be connected with electricity will eventually become a reality hence thanked the government.
Present at the launching included the Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, chiefs, Members of the community councils in the area and the villagers.
The project which is supported by the Lesotho Government amounts to over M12 million.
