SFL VISITS SEMONKONG SMALLHOLDER POTATO FARMERS

Private Sector Foundation of Lesotho (PSFL) on Thursday visited Semonkong Smallholder Potato Farmers to establish ways to help them grow their business.

Speaking at the event, the Private Sector Foundation of Lesotho Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Thabo Qhesi promised the farmers that the foundation will help them to find a market in order to sell their products, saying they will take the number of farmers and the quantity of their products to enhance this idea.

He stressed that the foundation will find a market for their potatoes and help them with the basic needs for proper potato production.

He said the Semonkong people need to make a living out of their rich soil hence the foundation is working tirelessly to help them.

Also Speaking, the Chairman of ‘Letlotlo Ke Tapole’, Mr. Molefi Mahapa expressed gratitude to the foundation, saying the visit gives them hope that their long-time challenges will be addressed.

He noted that potato production serves as a mine for Semonkong residents, saying due to their cool climate and rich soil they harvest great potatoes.

He noted that they use organic fertilizers in their soil hence their potatoes have a good taste than other potatoes.

He, therefore, pleaded with the government to help them with the proper storage of potatoes, saying their potatoes perish due to poor storage.

Mr. Mahapa further appealed to the government to assist them to find a proper market for their potatoes.

In July, the foundation also visited the Qacha’s Nek farmers with the same purpose.

The PSFL mandate is to facilitate sustained dialogue between the government of Lesotho, organise and promote the productivity and competitiveness of the business sector and entire economy of Lesotho.
