TOURISM MONTH’S FOCUS ON THREE PILLARS

With Tourism month almost reaching its peak, education, skills and jobs remain at the forefront of this year’s commemoration.
This is according to the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) Public Relation’s Officer, Mr. Molapo Matela who stated that through this year’s commemoration, the aim is to promote tourism and hospitality with the main focus on the youth.
He said in order to achieve that they have visited some of the higher learning institutions in the country as part of activities for this month, adding that based on this year’s theme: ‘Tourism and jobs, a better future for all’, the focus is on three pillar, education, skills and jobs.
Mr. Matela said the main celebration scheduled for Friday at Sekiring Sani in Mokhotlong will provide a platform for the community majority of whom earn a living through tourism as they are near Underberg South Africa from where tour operators regularly take tourists to Sani.
LTDC 2016 tourism statistics report shows that in 2014, about 1,078 510 tourists reportedly came to Lesotho whereas in 2015 they were 1,082 403. The report further shows that 1,081 227 which is equivalent to 90 per cent of the tourists came from South Africa.
The report also shows that revenue collected through tourism in 2016 was M844 million whereas in 2015 M822 million was collected.
According to the report 60 percent of visitors come to Lesotho for religious purposes whereas 28 per cent come for leisure and 11 per cent for business.
Tourism is regarded as one of the major contributory sectors to economic growth and job creation.
LTDC provides leadership in the development of a strong and vibrant tourism industry which contributes to sustainable economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation and protection of the natural environment.
It is mandated to market Lesotho as a preferred destination for tourists.
