The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Lesotho contributed over M2 million for contraceptives and condoms procurement made available to ensure continuity in delivery of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services.
The statement from UNFPA Lesotho notes that this is to assist the government of Lesotho in ensuring continuity of essential preventive and lifesaving SRHR services during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response.
It says UNFPA is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Lesotho Planned Parenthood Association (LPPA) and other stakeholders to ensure continuity supply of modern contraception and other needed supplies and to prevent disruption of services during the current lock-down.
It further adds that in support of the Ministry of Gender as the lead Ministry in gender related issues and prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV), UNFPA is working with Gender Links, the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) and other stakeholders to support efforts to prevent and respond to incidences of gender based violence.
The statement highlights that the main aim is to ensure that women and girls in particular get the relevant support they need to be free from any form of violence.
UNFPA is the lead United Nations (UN) agency, whose work involves the improvement of reproductive health including creation of national strategies and protocols, and providing supplies and services.
The agency also strives for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
