UNREGISTERED SIM CARDS DEACTIVATION IN JUNE

The Vodacom Lesotho Executive Head of Regulatory and External Affairs, Mr. Tsepo Ntaopane says unregistered sim cards will be deactivated on the 23rd of June 2023 at midnight.

He disclosed this at the press conference held in Maseru on Wednesday.

Mr. Ntaopane stressed that according to the Communications (Subscriber Identity Module Registration) regulations of 2021 all subscribers holding SIM Cards are required to register them before the deadline of 23 June 2023.

He noted that the consequences of non-registration include among others, SIM Card deactivation with the attendant risk of the holder losing their subscriber number together with the data and related services such as mobil/

xecutive Head of Sales and Distribution, Ms. Palesa Kaloli said Vodacom Lesotho has doubled the number of mobile registration agents, with the majority of additional agents going to rural and peri-urban areas, noting that official mobile sim registration agents can be identified with a branded vest, cap and a name badge with a name picture of the agent and a Vodacom logo.

She noted that Vodacom has identified points of registration which are Vodacom centres countrywide, certain hospitals, community council offices, border posts, and taxi ranks. She added that subscribers are encouraged to approach these centres with their National IDs and register their SIM Cards free of charge.

She mentioned that minors, elderly people, the infirm and people with disabilities are allowed to delegate someone close to them to register on their behalf, adding that representatives are expected to bring their own ID and that of the customer and an affidavit or Chiefs letter authorizing the proxy to register on behalf of the customer.

She urged subscribers including diplomats, companies, refugees, learners, and minors to ensure that they are fully registered.

On the same token, the Manager of M-pesa Financial Services, Ms. Thato Mathule said M-pesa accounts will also be affected, saying the accounts will also be blocked and the subscribers will be given two years to process their money.

She further noted that after two years the money will be transferred to Central Bank under uncleaned balances where users will have to collect their money.

The sim card registration was launched on June 24, 2022, by former Minister of Communications, Science, and Technology, Mr. Tšoinyana Rapapa in collaboration with the Lesotho Communications Authority the mobile operators being Vodacom Lesotho and Econet Telecom Lesotho.

Sixty percent of the eligible subscribers have registered thus far.
