LESOTHO ATTENDS AU COORDINATING MEETING

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane led the delegation of Lesotho to participate in the African Union (AU) Mid-Term Coordination Meeting in Accra Ghana.

While addressing this gathering, Mr. Mpotjoane showed that participation as well as classification should be well articulated and understood and should not limit or discriminate against any of the AU Member States in any manner

“Our effective contribution will depend on our ability to present a united front, as well as harmonizing the diverse interests of AU Member States to meaningfully influence global decisions,” said the Minister.

As South Africa’s G20 presidency in 2025 draws near, Mr. Mpotjoane encouraged the Union to double its efforts in working to become more independent in driving its own agenda as well as financing its participation in the G20.

In this meeting, Lesotho is reported to have welcomed the African Union Partnerships Strategy and Policy Framework acknowledging that it boldly communicates Member States’ commitment to realign the focus of Africa’s partnerships towards its continent’s priorities, values and principles as one of the major elements of the on-going AU reform process, and a continental priority.

The Meeting was preceded by the 45th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council which was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, delegates from various African countries and officials from the African Union Commission.

The G20 is a group of 19 countries as well as the African Union and the European Union. Between them they represent 85 percent of the global economy, 75 percent of world trade and 67 percent of the global population.
