YOUTH EMPOWERMENT TAKES CENTRE STAGE

The 2025 Sebabatso Youth Empowerment Initiative Conference officially opened at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre in Maseru on Monday, bringing together young people, innovators and stakeholders for a five day program running from September 15 to 19.

Speaking at the event, The Ministry of Trade and industry one stop Business Facilitation Centre (OBFC), Director, Mr Monaheng Monaheng said his ministry is committed to empowering youth innovation through the Sebabatso Youth Empowerment Initiative which continues to transform ideas into reality to create opportunities across Lesotho.

He highlighted that the Ministry is committed to positioning trade as a cornerstone of national development, adding that it has launched product diversification initiatives and established standard laboratories in Ha Tikoe to support industrial growth.

He further said that the Ministry is working on value chain projects. He added that youth owned businesses are registered free of charge.

On behalf of the Chinese embassy, Mr. Yang Xiaokun commended the Sebabatso Initiative, saying it is an inspiration just after two years of implementation.

He mentioned that two years ago, the Chinese Embassy sponsored 30 Basotho youth in agriculture, manufacturing and tourism which many have established their businesses.

Mr. Yang added that Sebabatso is a life changing journey that continues to create opportunities. He assured the youth that China will continue to stand by side with the Government of Lesotho in supporting youth empowerment.

He wished Basotho youth success noting that their achievements will not only benefit Lesotho but the world at large.

The Sebabatso Initiative was launched by the Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane in October 2023 to address high youth unemployment by nurturing young innovators and entrepreneurs into viable businesses through mentorship, exposure and investment opportunities.

The initiative which also involves the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Gender, Youth, and Social Development. It provides a platform to transform creative ideas into sustainable enterprises contributing to national development in sectors like agriculture, arts, science and technology.
