LESOTHO ADVANCES FOOD SECURITY THROUGH STRONG INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho officially received a modern grain storage and warehouse facility, generously donated by the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China.
The handover ceremony was led by the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Mr NtsokoaneMatekana together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Lejone Mpotjoane and other senior government officials.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr Mpotjoane, said the facility represents the handover of hope, resilience and flexibility for the farmers and families of the Kingdom of Lesotho, and a shared vision of a prosperous, stable and food-secure future for the nation.
He expressed deep appreciation to the Government and people of China, noting that the facility stands as a powerful testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations and their peoples.
He further highlighted that the project is a concrete manifestation of South–South Cooperation and reflects the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)’s focus on practical and impactful initiatives that directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
On the same note, Prime Minister Matekane emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Lesotho’s economy and the lifeblood of rural communities.
“For many years, farmers have faced devastating post-harvest losses caused by moisture, pests and inadequate storage facilities—challenges that have undermined livelihoods and national food security”, he said.
In addition to agricultural equipment valued at 35 million yuan received in October this year, the new warehouse facility will empower farmers to safely store their harvest and seeds, negotiate better prices in the market, and ensure that the fruits of their labour nourish the nation throughout the year.
Similarly, in his remarks, the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr Thabo Mofosi, welcomed support from China in training young Basotho to operate and manage the grain storage facility. He said that discussions  between Lesotho and China are already underway, including the development of a Memorandum of Understanding to guide management arrangements and responsibilities.
On behalf of the Basotho nation, the Government of Lesotho extends its sincere gratitude to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for their generous support and continued partnership in advancing food security, skills development and sustainable national development.
