Lesotho is gearing up for its Population and Housing Census scheduled for April 2026, a nationwide undertaking that will generate the data needed to shape the country’s future development and policy decisions, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced its support to Lesotho.
The census which will be conducted under the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning through the Bureau of Statistics will reach every household across the country, producing vital statistics for planning in critical sectors such as health, education, employment, housing, infrastructure and social protection. The Census will provide vital data regarding the size, structure, composition and distribution of population in Lesotho.
In an interview with the Agency, UNFPA Country Representative Mr. John Kennedy Mosoti said that the Fund is providing technical expertise, capacity building, Communication and visibility as well as support for resource mobilization to strengthen the entire census process.
‘Reliable, up-to-date population data is the backbone of effective decision-making,’ Mr. Mosoti said, noting that census results enable government and development partners to understand demographic trends and target interventions where they are needed most.
He added that UNFPA’s support aligns with its global mandate to promote sustainable development, sexual and reproductive health, and gender equality through quality population data.
Mr. Mosoti stressed that inclusive, high-quality data ensures that no one is left behind including women, young people, persons with disabilities and communities in hard-to-reach areas.
Calling on all Basotho to participate fully and provide accurate information, he emphasized that every person and every household matters as everyone counts.
Furthermore, he assured the public that all information collected by the government will remain confidential and will be used for statistical and development planning purposes.
In conclusion, Mr. Mosoti emphasized that Public cooperation is key and everyone must be visible for better services, informed planning and a stronger Lesotho.
