”Statistics from the recently completed population census is expected to contribute significantly towards addressing the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), as the Lesotho National Federation of Organizations of the Disabled (LNFOD) will rely on such data for planning and advocacy.”
This was said by LNFOD Executive Director, Mr. Rabasotho Moeletsi in an interview with the Agency.
He clarified that the Federation has been unable to compile comprehensive nationwide statistics on PWDs due to financial constraints, as it depends on donor funding.
“We used to organise public gatherings and encourage chiefs and community members to identify PWDs in their constituencies,” he said, adding that the exercise was conducted in selected constituencies within the districts of Leribe, Berea, Botha-Bothe and Mohale’s Hoek.
He also said the census statistics will make it easier to address issues such as unemployment, access to healthcare services, disability grants and education among PWDs.
“We arranged for the population census to include the categorization of disabilities so that we can determine the exact number of PWDs, including those who are employed and those who are attending school, among others,” he said.
LNFOD was established in 1989 with the objective to advocate for rights and inclusion of PWDs. It plays a key role in influencing disability inclusive policies as well as raising awareness on disability issues nationwide.
