The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Kanono Ramashamole, has delivered Lesotho’s Country Policy Statement at the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-26) in Abuja, Nigeria.
Speaking as Member States deliberate on the African Telecommunications Union’s Strategic Plan for 2027–2031 and prepare to elect the Union’s next leadership, including the Administrative Council and Secretary-General, Mr Ramashamole stressed the importance of Africa speaking with one united voice on matters shaping the continent’s digital future.
He said Africa’s influence would be measured not by the number of its delegations, but by the strength of its common voice, particularly as the continent finalises common proposals ahead of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha.
Lesotho also highlighted its progress in digital governance, Artificial Intelligence, data management, broadband and shared infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital public infrastructure and digital government.
The Kingdom further called for stronger international frameworks on Digital Public Infrastructure and AI-ready data governance, with particular consideration for Landlocked Developing Countries, Least Developed Countries and Small States.
Lesotho also called for equal treatment of all official languages of the Union in its documentation, deliberations and outreach, while proposing that the elevated Technical and Development Conference be renamed the African Digital Development Conference.
Lesotho remains committed to working with all Member States to ensure that Africa not only shapes the digital future but helps lead it.
