LESOTHO COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS

The Government of Lesotho today joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of Forests, marking the occasion a day ahead of its official date of March 21st. The event was held at Taung Ha Serobele in Mohale’s Hoek, where leaders and community members gathered to promote environmental conservation and highlight the need to recognize forests as engines of inclusive growth of Economy.
His Majesty King Letsie III and The Right Honourable Prime Minister Samuel Matekane graced the event by planting trees at Meeling Primary School, symbolizing the country’s commitment to restoring forests and combating climate change.
The commemoration highlighted the critical role forests play in sustaining livelihoods, preserving biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of climate change and this day was also recognized by the UN to raise awareness about the importance of all types of all types of forests, tree-planting initiatives, survival of humanity and the Planet. Forests underpin livelihoods, generate employment, reduce poverty for many people especially rural-based and forest-dependent communities.
The theme for 2026 International Day of Forests is ‘Forests and Economies”
