The usage of emerging technologies and innovation that seem to be spreading across the globe can in a way help in the improvement of sustainable agricultural systems.
This was said by the Minister of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation Ms Nthati Moorosi, during a panel discussion at the High level dialogue on the Future of Food Security in Lesotho which was held in Maseru on Tuesday.
In her remarks during these discussions, Ms Moorosi indicated that the usage of technology can help farmers with the acquisition of markets which can enable them to better sell of their produce.
She highlighted that digital platforms can also help farmers meet with the suppliers of seeds, machinery and fertilisers.
She added that when well utilised, technology can help farmers stream activities and robotics that can help lower activities such extended labour in fields.
Echoing the same sentiments, Dr. Abebe Haile Gabriel who is the Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for Africa, FAO said water technologies can help the future of the commercial agriculture of Lesotho and help it achieve better production, nutrition and life.
He mentioned that this transformation can help through innovation as Lesotho can capitalise on its potential to grow exotic fruits and vegetables which it can also supply other countries with.
Dr. Gabriel stated that with the potential that Lesotho holds in terms of agricultural production needs attention as it can also be used to create employment and improve the country’s economy.
While speaking of the actions to be taken towards sustainable agriculture in the country, Dr ‘Mathabo Tsela, who is the President of the Lesotho National Farmers Union (LENAFU) said there is a need to shift from labour intensive operations to mechanisation of agriculture which she said needs appropriate machinery and technological innovations.
On the other hand, Ms. Valerie Guarneri, who is the Assistant Executive Director for Programme Operations World Food Programme (WFP) stated that Lesotho needs to embark on agricultural processes that ensure that no one is left behind on issues of food Security.
She said there is news for the government to ensure that skills and training are embedded in farmers to ensure that they benefit from the latest technologies.
