LESOTHO AT TICAD 9: A BOLD STEP TOWARD YOUTH EMPOWERMENT & SUSTAINABLE GROWTH!

The Kingdom of Lesotho is proudly taking part in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), currently under way in Yokohama, Japan.
The Lesotho delegation is led by the Prime Minister, Mr Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Lejone Mpotjoane, the Government Secretary, Mrs Malisebo Mokela, Principal Secretary Lekhela, as well as the Kingdom’s Ambassador to Japan, Mr Retšelisitsoe Theko.
During the ninth plenary session, Prime Minister Matekane delivered a keynote address in which he reminded fellow Heads of Government that Lesotho is blessed with abundant water resources, making it possible to generate hydropower.
He explained that the government is committed to harnessing this potential, not only to meet energy needs, but also as a way to create jobs and reduce youth unemployment.
Prime Minister further shared that youth employment projects are being established across the country to fight poverty and open opportunities for young people.
TICAD 9, which runs from 20–22 August 2025, is a vital platform for strengthening cooperation between Africa and Japan.
This year’s conference is shining a spotlight on sustainable growth, technology, innovation, and human development.
Japan has pledged major financial support through the African Development Bank, alongside plans to train tens of thousands of young people in artificial intelligence to prepare Africa for the future of work. Young leaders are also making their mark through “Youth TICAD 2025,” where African and Japanese youth are shaping a long-term vision for development up to 2055.
