The Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms Nthati Moorosi, delivered her remarks at the 28th Universal Postal Congress held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
She stated that Lesotho is transforming its postal services into e-services centers through the implementation of connectivity and ICT equipment, with the aim of achieving digital inclusion, particularly in rural areas. She explained that these services now extend beyond mail delivery to support social grants and align with the Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty reduction and reduced inequalities.
She further emphasized that by embracing digital technologies, Lesotho is creating new opportunities for commerce, government-to-citizen interactions, and community empowerment. She said digital platforms will enable citizens to access services more efficiently, foster financial inclusion, and open pathways for small businesses to participate in e-commerce.
“These efforts demonstrate Lesotho’s determination to leverage innovation as a driver of national development, while ensuring that every citizen benefits from technological progress”, she added.
The minister also congratulated the re-elected Director of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Masahiko Metoki, and the Deputy Director General, Marjan Osvald. She reaffirmed Lesotho’s commitment to advancing postal services and strengthening the UPU’s role in global connectivity.
In coclusion, she recounted the long history of postal services in Lesotho, their evolution to include telecommunications and financial services such as the Post Bank, and the current focus on digital transformation through e-services as part of the National Digital Transformation Strategy.
