The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane and US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Mr Thomas Hines, signed a five-year Bilateral Health Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.
The arrangement includes $364 million (approximately M6.21 billion) in planned investment to support Lesotho’s long-term health priorities. The agreement outlines a shared vision to save lives, strengthen Lesotho’s health system, and build resilience while promoting national ownership of health delivery. The partnership builds on Lesotho’s significant progress in tackling HIV/AIDS, having surpassed the 95-95-95 global targets by reaching 97-97-99.
The arrangement indicates that, working with the U.S. Congress, the United States intends to provide up to USD 232 million over the next five years to help combat HIV/AIDS, strengthen the health workforce, improve data systems, and enhance disease surveillance. In turn, the Government of Lesotho plans to invest USD 132 million to reinforce its integrated health system and safeguard progress already made.
The Minister of Health, Mr Selibe Mochoboroane, witnessed the signing and expressed satisfaction with this development. He reported that Lesotho will be introducing Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention medication, and said he was confident it would help stop new infections within five years.
The Minister of Finance also noted in her remarks that she welcomed this investment and expressed appreciation for the United States’ continued support during a time when Basotho face significant health challenges.
