Representatives from the Governments of the Kingdom of Lesotho and the United States of America have negotiated a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining the next five years of strengthened joint commitments to Lesotho’s healthcare system.
The new agreement builds on the 18 years of foreign assistance that the American people have provided, which has significantly contributed to the country’s progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
According to a statement by the U.S. Embassy Spokesperson, Ms. Jessica Tesoriero, the bilateral agreement expands on the health support that the United States has offered since 2007 through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and it will ensure joint funding for frontline healthcare workers as well as for the procurement of essential medical commodities during the five-year implementation period.
She added that the agreement provides for the establishment of robust data systems capable of monitoring potential outbreaks and assessing broader health outcomes and it further outlines U.S. technical assistance to support the Government of Lesotho as it assumes increased responsibility over key health system management functions.
